Tired of Dystopian Sci-Fi? You Might Like Solarpunk. – Mother Jones

I’ve been intentionally browsing the web old school. Avoiding Facebook and Instagram, and reading blogs.

I currently have about 15 tabs open, which is rare. If I have been off the computer for more than an hour, old tabs are dead to me.

I realised it’s because blogs link to other content. Facebook and Instagram rarely links to other content. Or rather, posts that link to other content are torpedoed by the algorithm. Facebook doesn’t want that type of content. They want you to stay on Facebook, at all costs.

A few years ago, before my dad died, he made me a new letterbox. Apparently he wasn’t lichen the old one.

I didn’t install it until after he passed, which I regret, but it has been up since July 2022, calmy collecting mail.

I think the wood may have been a little green, and so the finish started peeling off. Ultimately, the post rusted through at gound level, and the whole thing fell over in a storm on Friday.

I put in a new post (Concrete merit badge earned), and did some sanding, and applied new finish. The base of the box had also sagged, so I’ve made a new one. Fortunately that was only screwed in, so it was easy to replace.

I didn’t sand the old finish away completely, so you can still see the layers. Some mould in the wood, some bare timber, some old finish. Patina.

Spending time working on this, was spending time with dad, of course. Maybe one day I’ll make my kids a mailbox.

Micrographics is a type of design, as shown below. The type of things you might see on a glass window, maybe incorporated into the frit band, if you’re lucky.

I think it’s a cool aesthetic, especially mixed with some cyberpunk. I think it could make for a good album cover.
